The Value of Individual Counseling

Many people believe psychology is a lot of hocus-pocus. But psychology is a well-established science with a scientific method and therapies show real results. Psychology is a valued scientific field which has helped solve mysteries of human behavior since 387 BC. It started with Plato and then Aristotle when they realized that some aspects of behavior and emotion were directly linked with overall health.

The Value of Individual Counseling

For example, syphilis was found to be a medical condition which caused mental and emotional impairment. From then on, psychology has been improving rapidly with the addition of each experiment and observation. Thousands of psychologists have contributed to the joint knowledge which makes up the science. Just a few famous names are; Sigmund Freud, Ivan Pavlov, John Skinner and John Watson.

Through movies and books, psychologists have received certain labels and stereotypes. Do you picture a therapist in a chair asking question after question and the patient lying on a fainting couch? This is one form of therapy which was made famous by Sigmund Freud. However, there are many other versions of therapy which have proven just as effective; cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, behavioral, family therapy and other forms of counseling. Therapy can be very helpful to all kinds of people struggling with all kinds of difficulty and there is nothing to be ashamed of when consulting a psychologist. This is why individual counseling is a valuable resource for anyone.

Without psychology, we would have no discussion or treatment for disorders such as schizophrenia, anorexia, narcissistic personality disorder and hundreds more. Everyone needs help navigating the very human aspects of emotion and mental health and everyone deserves treatment and to recover. Sometimes leaning on a friend or family member is not enough; sometimes a trained professional is required. Psychologists are valuable resources and we are here to help!
